STARTED AS A PRIVATE FIRST IN THE ILLIONIS INDEPENDENT CAVALRY, MOVED TO A CAPTAIN, TO A MAJOR AND IN 1863 WAS PROMOTED TO ADJ. GENERAL BY SHERMAN. AGAIN AFTER THE WAS WAS PROMOTED IN HIS OTHER STATE BY GOVERNOR ALSTON TO A ADJ. GENERAL (1870) HE WAS A BUSINESS MAN IN HIS STATE AND SERVED AS PRESIDENT FOR THE CHICAGO GREAT WESTERN RAILROAD. LATER WAS A POSTMASTER GENERAL IN ST. PAUL. THIS HISTORICAL SWORD IS A HIGH GRADE SWORD with fantastic motiffs . ( u.s. flags, stars, eagles and fully ingraved on both sides of the blade. untouched petina and full wrap and wire. it comes with the original letter post-marked by flowers great- great grandson Norman Hawkins of Southern Pines n.c. his full history is attached with many wonderful and historical articles of this great man.
